Challenge:

Nick was just let go from his position as a Regional Director of Sales at a small tech company. Unsure of how to approach the next chapter of his life, he contacted Mike.

Advice & Coaching:

When discussing the stressful and sometimes embarrassing reality of being let go, Mike helped Nick regain the confidence he once had and realize that the situation is merely “a bump in the road” on his long-term career path.   After lending empathy by understanding Nick’s situation and feelings, Mike suggested a few books to read that explore different levels of being an effective leader, including dealing with the unexpected, such as job loss. These books taught Nick that leaders who only stay on a personal level with their employees, are not successful on the business level. Mike stated that it is important during Nick’s search to look for a company that has challenges, and where he knows that he can bring his skillset and attitude to change it for the better. Also, it is not going to be easy, but with hardwork and determination, recognizing opportunities, and knowing when to be stearn as necessary, Nick will go far in his career.

Outcome:

After only 5 weeks of being unemployed, Nick successfully found a job as a Regional Vice President of Sales where he now has a base salary that exceeds the salary + commission of his former position.  Through Mike’s coaching and mentorship, Nick knows what it takes to lead, and the characteristics he wants to embody as his career continues. Further, Nick recognizes that it takes hard work, dedication and a spirit of leadership to manage through the unexpected, and is now armed to guide others who experience tough situations.  In this regard, Mike’s advice has also helped Nick be an influential leader in his new company.
